Technical (RAW vs JPEG)- Alexandra

A RAW file is the lossless data from the camera’s sensor. It is typically in a proprietary format that is uncompressed and therefore the image appears not as sharp.

JPEG on the other hand, is the predominant file format used for colored image compression in digital cameras. JPEG compresses files by discarding color information that the human eye cannot recognize. This format significantly reduces the file size, but image quality deteriorates as the compression rate increases.

The photo above on the left is the RAW image. The sky around the horse’s head reads very white. If this were a JPEG, there wouldn’t be too much you could do with this image. However, because it is a RAW image there is recoverable data. By adjusting the exposure and contrast the image may be altered, which may be viewed in the image above on the right.
